Avery Koonce, a 19-year-old cadet at the US Air Force Academy, tragically died on September 4th, 2024, in her Colorado dorm room due to complications from pneumonia. An autopsy revealed her death was caused by a rare bacterial infection, Paeniclostridium sordelli, which developed secondary to a viral lung infection.
Experts believe the infection could have been treated with antibiotics and timely medical intervention. Dr. Michael Baden, a forensic pathologist, emphasized that Koonce essentially died from untreated pneumonia, with her weakened immune system from the viral infection making her susceptible to the bacteria. Before her death, Koonce had experienced common pneumonia symptoms, including a chronic cough, fever, and difficulty breathing. However, she may not have sought treatment in time. Known for her athletic prowess, Koonce had been a standout sprinter in high school and was a member of the Academy’s track team. Her parents described her as “an incredible bright light,” and her death has underscored the importance of seeking medical help for respiratory infections.
